ABOUT ABOUT

Back for one night only! Come see She Stoops to Conquer before the show goes on the road for a performance at the International Thespian Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska.

First performed in 1773, She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith is a masterful romantic Comedy of Manners in which nothing is as it appears, and no one is who they seem to be.  Mr. Hardcastle loves his country estates and simple life, much to the chagrin of his wife who longs for the gaiety of London’s fashionable scene.  Yet, they agree on marrying their children well.  Mr. Hardcastle wishes dearly that his lovely daughter, Kate, marry the son of his boyhood friend, Sir Charlie Marlowe to which end Mr. Hardcastle has invited the young Marlowe to sojourn with them in the country.  Young Marlowe, a dashing but very shy gentleman, drags along his best friend George Hastings to help him make conversation with the Hardcastles and the lively, Kate.  Learning that the girl he loves, Constance Neville, resides with her aunt, Mrs. Hardcastle, George is only too glad to join the adventure.  Difficulties arise when Young Marlowe and George lose their way and stop at an Inn for directions where they meet Tony Lumpkin, child of Mrs. Hardcastle by her first marriage.  Tony has retreated to the Inn to escape his mother’s constant urgings to marry his cousin, Constance, keeping her fortune within their family.  When he learns that Young Marlowe and George are on the way to his home, after overhearing them describe him as a lumpish idiot, Tony send them on a wild goose chase bringing them at last to the Hardcastle residence which Young Marlowe and George mistakenly believe is an Inn.  And so begins a delightful romp in the 18th Century with many hilarious twists and turns.  She Stoops to Conquer is a gem you won’t want to miss!
