First produced in 1964, Fiddler on the Roof is the beloved musical about Tevye, his wife Golde, and their five daughters. Living in Czarist Russia on the brink of revolution, Tevye, a poor milkman, struggles to find suitable husbands for his marriageable daughters, even as anti-Semitism and the changing social climate impact his choices – and his daughters’ futures. Filled with songs that have become part of the American Songbook – such as “Sunrise, Sunset.” “Matchmaker,” and “If I Were A Rich Man” – Fiddler on the Roof has brought laughter and tears, joy and sorrow to generations around the world who find empathy with the honesty and warmth of one family’s story. The “Traditions” of Tevye and his community connect us across race, class, nationality, religion, and time.
